Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the review being conducted?

The Banking Code Compliance Committee (BCCC) is undergoing an independent review, as required by its Charter. The Review is an opportunity to consider how the BCCC can continue to deliver strong, independent oversight banks’ compliance with the Banking Code of Practice. It will explore what is working well, where the BCCC can be more effective, and how its impact can be strengthened for the future.

Is this the same as the Banking Code Review?

This Review is focused on the BCCC itself, including how effectively it performs its role as the independent body responsible for monitoring banks’ compliance with the Banking Code and holding banks accountable to their Code commitments.

The Banking Code of Practice is owned by the Australian Banking Association (ABA), which is conducting its own separate review of the Code. That review will consider the Code itself, including whether any changes should be made to it.

You can find more information about the ABA’s Banking Code Review on its website.

Who can make a submission?

Any interested parties are welcome to make a submission. You can find the Terms of Reference here.

What happens after the review?

At the conclusion of the Review, the Independent Reviewer will provide a final report and recommendations to the BCCC for consideration. The BCCC will then consider the findings and recommendations and publish a formal response setting out how it intends to respond.
